A book cover for an Islamic jurisprudence title, where restraint is the whole design brief.

The challenge

A scholarly religious title has to look authoritative without looking austere, and it carries Arabic and Latin type that have to sit together without either one looking like an afterthought.

The approach

The Arabic sets the tone and the Latin follows its weight, both given room. Ornament is kept to a single structural element rather than applied as pattern, and the palette stays deep and quiet so the title carries the cover.

Outcome

• Arabic and Latin type balanced rather than stacked
• Ornament used structurally, in one place
• A cover that reads at thumbnail size and in the hand
